Fire damper installation QA checklist
The best time to find a wrong product, opening or method is before the wall is closed. This checklist keeps the evidence attached to the exact damper rather than relying on memory at handover.
This is not a universal installation method. Fire and smoke dampers are life-safety devices. The current manufacturer IOM, approved fire strategy, supporting construction and project inspection plan control the work.
1. Before the opening is formed
- Confirm the approved drawing reference, damper tag and location.
- Confirm manufacturer, exact product family, size, type and actuator arrangement.
- Select the tested installation method that matches the actual wall or floor construction.
- Check the required supporting-construction type, thickness and any framing or pattress detail.
- Identify whether the opening is based on nominal duct, outside casing, installation frame or a published table.
- Confirm finished aperture versus structural cut and whether reveal lining must be added.
- Check minimum separation from adjacent construction and other dampers.
- Confirm there is space for the actuator, access doors, inspection and future replacement.
2. On delivery and before installation
- Photograph the product label clearly enough to read the model, size and identifiers.
- Check the delivered item matches the approved schedule and selected method.
- Inspect the casing, blades, seals, actuator, installation frame and supplied components for damage.
- Check blade-axis orientation and airflow or installation-direction markings where the product specifies them.
- Keep manufacturer-supplied brackets, angles, cleats, pattress components and fixing instructions with the correct damper.
- Stop if the product cannot be positively identified—do not choose a method because another damper looks similar.
3. During installation
- Set the damper at the position and depth shown by the tested detail.
- Keep the casing square and free from distortion.
- Use the required fixing locations, types and centres; do not omit holes because access is awkward.
- Install only the specified penetration seal, batt, mortar, board, pattress or angle arrangement.
- Keep required clearances around the casing or installation frame.
- Independently support connected ductwork where required and use the specified breakaway connection.
- Keep mortar, sealant, fixings and debris clear of moving blades and the airway.
- Maintain actuator and access-door clearance after insulation and other services are installed.
4. Evidence before the wall or ceiling is closed
Take photographs while the information can still be seen. A useful record normally includes:
- Damper label and tag/location reference.
- Overall installation showing the supporting construction.
- Opening clearance before it is hidden.
- Frame, cleats, angles, pattress or fixing positions.
- Penetration seal or lining arrangement at each accessible face.
- Duct connections and nearby independent supports.
- Actuator, wiring route and maintenance access.
Photographs need context. A close-up of sealant with no damper tag, location or surrounding construction is difficult to use as evidence later.
5. Before handover
- Check that the damper and access doors remain reachable.
- Confirm blades can operate without obstruction.
- Complete the required functional test and controls test with the responsible commissioning team.
- Record the damper tag, location, model, size, method, test result and any defects.
- Link photographs and manufacturer documentation to the same record.
- Resolve review items and defects before marking the installation verified.
- Keep the final record with the project's fire-safety information and maintenance requirements.
